It landed and it’s here, the World’s First Girmit Graphic Novel

We teamed up with Fijian animator and illustrator, Tui Ledua to share the true story of a young boy who inadvertently found himself tied to an indentured labour contract at the age of 14.

Lali Maharaj grew up in a place that was being devastated by famine. Compelled to help his community and family, he left his home and boarded a ship in the port of Calcutta.

His journey took three months and when he arrived in a foreign tropical land, Lali found himself in Fiji, 7,000 miles away from his homeland. He had to form a new life in this place as an indentured labourer.
